Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- sulphuric acid : H2SO4 sodium metaperiodate : NaIO4 manganese (II) sulfate : MnSO4 . H2O
Class: ------ elem=I,Mn redox
Summary: -------- Periodate is capable of oxidizing manganese (II) to permanganate completely in a short period of time. This is one of the rare examples of an oxidizer, which is capable to oxidize manganese all up to the +7 oxidation state in aqueous environments.
Description: ------------ Dissolve some manganese sulfate in dilute sulphuric acid and add an excess amount of solid NaIO4 to this liquid: The NaIO4 dissolves and the liquid remains colorless.
Heat the liquid: Now, the color of the liquid slowly changes to deep purple. At the elevated temperatures, the manganese is oxidized to permanganate. This reaction takes several minutes, however, even at elevated temperatures.
