Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- sodium sulfite : Na2SO3 formic acid : HCOOH potassium permanganate : KMnO4
Class: ------ elem=Mn redox
Summary: -------- Permanganate is capable of oxidizing formic acid quickly, itself being reduced to manganese (IV). Sulfite is needed to bring the manganese to the +2 oxidation state.
Description: ------------ Add some solid KMnO4 to HCOOH (85% by weight): Immediate violent reaction. A lot of a colorless gas is produced. If the reaction is completed, then the liquid is turbid and dark brown, almost black.
Add some of a solution of Na2SO3 in water: The liquid slowly turns lighter and clearer. After approximately 30 seconds, the liquid is clear and colorless.
