Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- succinic acid : HOOC CH2 CH2 COOH oxalic acid : HOOC COOH . 2H2O sulphuric acid : H2SO4 potassium permanganate : KMnO4
Class: ------ elem=Mn redox
Summary: -------- Potassium permanganate easily oxidizes oxalic acid. Succinic acid is not oxidized easily.
Description: ------------ Add an excess amount of succinic acid to a solution of KMnO4 and heat to appr. 60 C: The permanganate is reduced, but not completely. The liquid turns purple/red and a little bit turbid.
Add some sulphuric acid (appr. 15% by weight): No visible changes.
Add an excess amount of oxalic acid: Evolution of a gas, the liquid becomes clear and colorless.
