Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- iodic acid : HIO3
Class: ------ elem=I redox
Summary: -------- Iodic acid, when heated, first gives off water vapor. When the resulting solid is heated much stronger, then purple clouds of iodine appear and finally, all solid is gone.
Description: ------------ Put some solid iodic acid in a clean and dry test tube and carefully heat the test tube: Water vapor is formed. This can be seen as small droplets of water in higher cooler parts of the test tube.
Heat much stronger: The solid completely decomposes and iodine and oxygen are formed. Deep purple iodine vapor is formed, which forms nice crystals in higher and cooler parts of the test tube. On prolonged heating, finally no solid remains at all.
