Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- sodium bromate : NaBrO3 nitric acid : HNO3 bismuth : Bi
Class: ------ elem=Br,Bi redox
Summary: -------- Bismuth(III) in aqueous nitric acid solution does not form a precipitate with bromate ion.
Description: ------------ Prepare a solution of bismuth nitrate from bismuth metal and nitric acid. Dilute the liquid somwwhat such that a 20% acid is obtained with the bismuth in it. Add a concentrated solution of sodium bromate to the clear solution of bismuth nitrate in nitric acid: No precipitate is formed. On longer standing no crystalline solid is obtained. So, bismuth(III) does not form an insoluble or only moderately soluble bromate, like some other metals do.
