Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- hydrochloric acid : HCl ferric sulfate : Fe2(SO4)3
Class: ------ elem=Fe coordination
Summary: -------- When ferric sulfate is dissolved in water, then an almost colorless liquid is formed. On addition of chloride, a coordination complex (brown/yellow) is formed.
Description: ------------ Add some solid ferric sulfate to some distilled water: The solid at first does not dissolve. After one day, however, all of it is dissolved. The liquid is clear and colorless.
Add a little amount of dilute HCl (appr. 10% by weight): The liquid becomes yellow brown and clear. The chloride ions form a complex with the ferric ions and make the liquid yellow/brown (the familiar color of an acidified solution of ferric chloride).
