Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- sodium sulfide : Na2S . 3H2O carbon disulfide : CS2
Class: ------ elem=C,S coordination
Summary: -------- Carbon disulfide slowly reacts with an aqueous solution of sodium sulfide. The resulting solution finally becomes deep orange.
Description: ------------ Add a few drops of carbon disulfide to a fairly concentrated solution of sodium sulfide in water: Initially nothing special seems to happen. The drops of carbon disulfide sink to the bottom and a blob of liquid is formed under the aqueous layer.
Stopper the test tube and allow it to stand for a few weeks: Slowly the blob of liquid disappears and it dissolves. While it does so, the color of the liquid deepens from light yellow to beautiful deep orange. Finally, after a few weeks all of the carbon disulfide has dissolved and a deep orange liquid is obtained. This deep orange liquid must be a solution of trithiocarbonate ion, CS3(2-).
