Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- sulphur : S8 carbon disulfide : CS2
Class: ------ elem=C,S precipitation
Summary: -------- Sulphur dissolves in carbon disulfide exceedingly easily.
Description: ------------ Add a spatula full of flowers of sulphur to 1 ml of carbon disulfide and swirl the test tube: Within just a few seconds all of the sulphur dissolves and a yellow solution is obtained. It really is remarkable to see how easily the sulphur dissolves.
Pour the liquid in a petri dish (do this outside!): The carbon disulfide quickly evaporates and small crystals of sulphur remain behind.
--------------------------------------------
Remark: Initially, the carbon disulfide hardly has any smell, but when it has been in contact with the air for some time, then its smell becomes worse and worse. The liquid in the petri dish is really foul smelling! Most likely this is due to some reactions of carbon disulfide with humid and/or oxygen from the air, especially in bright sunlight.
