Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- hydroxyl amine hydrochloride : NH2OH.HCl sodium metaperiodate : NaIO4
Class: ------ elem=N,I redox
Summary: -------- Sodium periodate reacts violently with hydroxyl amine hydrochloride in aqueous solution.
Description: ------------ Prepare a fairly concentrated solution of NH2OH.HCl, hydroxyl amine hydrochloride by dissolving a few 100's of mg of this solid in 1 ml of water: A clear and colorless solution is obtained.
Add some solid sodium metaperiodate (NaIO4) to this solution: As soon as the solid comes in contact with the solution, a lot of colorless gas is produced and free iodine is produced as well. The liquid becomes hot and one can see some purple vapor of iodine above the liquid. The liquid starts foaming, due to formation of elemental iodine, which forms thin layers of liquid and bubbles, which contain the colorless gas.
