Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- sodium metaperiodate : NaIO4 sodium iodide : NaI
Class: ------ elem=I redox
Summary: -------- Iodide ion and metaperiodate react with formation of iodine. This reaction occurs, even in the absence of an acid.
Description: ------------ Mix some NaIO4 and NaI and add a few drops of water: The liquid/slurry becomes deep brown/red.
Heat the liquid: The water boils away. Remarkably, hardly any iodine vapors are produced. These apparently are kept behind in the liquid, because of the absence of acid. The air above the heaviliy boiling small slurry only is very pale purple, almost colorless.
