Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- hydrochloric acid : HCl perchloric acid : HClO4
Class: ------ elem=Cl
Summary: -------- Hydrogen chloride does not dissolve very well in concentrated perchloric acid.
Description: ------------ Add a few drops of concentrated hydrochloric acid (35% HCl by weight) to concentrated perchloric acid (70% HClO4 by weight) and swirl: The liquids mix and there is some bubbling in the liquid, similar to the formation of bubbles in soda water. On shaking, more bubbles are formed. On gentle heating, quite some gas escapes from the liquid. The bubbles are gaseous HCl, the gas strongly fumes in contact with air.
