Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- iodine : I2 chlorosulfonic acid : ClSO2(OH)
Class: ------ elem=S,I coordination
Summary: -------- Iodine dissolves somewhat in chlorosulfonic acid with a brown color.
Description: ------------ Add a single granule of iodine (2 mm diameter) to 0.5 ml of chlorosulfonic acid: The iodine partially dissolves, giving a yellowish/brown solution. The liquid, adhering to the glass looks orange/yellow. The color is not like the brown of iodine in diethyl ether, alcohol or a concentrated iodide solution in water. It is more yellowish. No further visible reaction occurs. The iodine most likely is not oxidized by the chlorosulfonic acid to an higher oxidation state.
