Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- ethylene diamine : NH2 CH2 CH2 NH2 copper sulfate anhydrous : CuSO4
Class: ------ elem=N,Cu coordination
Summary: -------- When ethylene diamine is added to anhydrous copper sulfate, then no complex is formed. When a little water is added, then suddenly a deep blue/purple complex is formed. Apparently, some water is needed for formation of the ethylene diamine complex.
Description: ------------ Add half a ml of ethylene diamine to a small amount of anhydrous copper sulfate: Hardly any reaction occurs. The solid changes from white to pale blue with a green hue. No solid seems to dissolve.
Add one ml of water: The liquid at once turns deep purple/blue, a complex of copper(II) with ethylene diamine is formed. The anhydrous copper sulfate quickly dissolves and the final result is a liquid with a very intense color.
