Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- hydrochloric acid : HCl metol : (CH3 NH C6H4 OH)2 . H2SO4 pyrogallol : C6H3 (OH)3 hydroquinone : HO C6H4 OH resorcinol : HO C6H4 OH catechol : C6H4 (OH)2 ferric chloride : FeCl3 . 6H2O ferrous sulfate : FeSO4 . 7H2O
Class: ------ elem=Fe coordination
Summary: -------- Phenol and its derivatives form highly colored coordination complexes with ferrous and ferric ions.
Description: ------------ A set of experiments is performed with two types of solutions of iron-salt and a range of solutions of common photographic developers and reseorcinol. The following solutions of iron-salts are prepared: ferrous sulfate ferric chloride, acidified with some hydrochloric acid
To these solutions the photo developers were added. Each developer was added to its own solution of iron-salt.
The following table can be made of all performed color-reactions:
| catechol | resorcinol | hydroquinone | pyrogallol | metol | --------+-------------+-------------+--------------+--------------+----------| ferrous | dark blue/ | no reaction | no reaction | dark blue/ | no | | purple | | | indigo | reaction | --------+-------------+-------------+--------------+--------------+----------| ferric | dark green | purple/grey | blue, turns | dark red/ | no | acidic | later black | faint color | yellow/brown | brown, later | reaction | | | | quickly | brown | | -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
