Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- ammonia : NH3 hydrogen peroxide : H2O2 cobalt chloride : CoCl2.6H2O
Class: ------ elem=Co coordination redox
Summary: -------- Cobalt (II) appears to react with ammonia, but only when an oxidizer is available. The resulting compound has an intense color.
Description: ------------ Dissolve some CoCl6.6H2O in a 3% solution of H2O2: The solid dissolves and the liquid turns pink. The color is the same as when the cobalt chloride is dissolved in plain water.
Add some NH3 (15% by weight): Vigorous foaming of the liquid, it almost goes out of the test tube. The temperature of the liquid slightly increases, it becomes luke-warm. The liquid turns dark red/brown.
Heat the liquid and add a little more H2O2 (3%): Liquid remains dark red/ brown and a lot of oxygen is evolved.
