Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- hydrochloric acid : HCl nitric acid : HNO3
Class: ------ elem=N,Cl redox
Summary: -------- When nitric acid is mixed with hydrochloric acid, then so called aqua regia is obtained. This is a colorless liquid, which, however, is not very stable and which decomposes. What are the decomposition products?
Description: ------------ Mix some HNO3 (at least 50% by weight) with HCl (appr. 30% by weight): The resulting liquid is colorless.
Heat the liquid: The liquid first becomes green, after a while it becomes yellow/brown. Above the liquid a yellow/brown gas (mixture?) is formed. There is some effervescence, as long as the liquid is hot. The gas is no Cl2 (color), but its smell is like that of chlorine, hence the gas also is no NO2. It may be a mixture, containing chlorine (explaining its smell) and NO2 (explaining its color), but it may also be another colored gas.
