Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- ascorbic acid : C6H8O6 potassium tetrachloroplatinate (II) : K2PtCl4
Class: ------ elem=Pt redox
Summary: -------- Platinum (II) can be reduced to metallic platinum fairly easily.
Description: ------------ Add ascorbic acid to a strongly diluted solution of K2PtCl4: The solid dissolves. No further visible changes.
Heat the liquid: Before the liquid starts boiling, the liquid becomes turbid and shifts within a few seconds from clear and very light brown to completely opaque and black. The black solid is finely divided metallic platinum.
