Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- potassium ferricyanide : K3 [Fe(CN)6] sodium sulfite : Na2SO3 sodium hydroxide : NaOH hydroquinone : HO C6H4 OH
Class: ------ elem=C,Fe redox
Summary: -------- Hydroquinone is readily oxidized by ferricyanide, even in the presence of sulfite, when in alkaline environments.
Description: ------------ Dissolve some hydroquinone in a liquid, containing both sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfite: The liquid becomes pale yellow.
Add some very dilute (pale yellow) solution of potassium ferricyanide: The liquid turns light orange and becomes noticably more intensely colored.
