Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- hydrogen peroxide : H2O2 hydroquinone : HO C6H4 OH
Class: ------ elem=C redox
Summary: -------- Hydroquinone is oxidized by hydrogen peroxide. This reaction is slow in a neutral environment.
Description: ------------ Add a 3% solution of H2O2 to a solution of hydroquinone: The solution at first remains colorless, but slowly the liquid turns pink (not a very bright pink color, but a little brownish, 'dirty' pink). After 10 minutes at appr. 15 C the liquid is clear brownish-pink.
Add a drop of 3% H2O2 to solid hydroquinone: The liquid around the needles of hydroquinone turns brown. When water is added, the brown liquid mixes with the water and a clear brownish-pink liquid is formed.
