Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- sodium hydroxide : NaOH sodium persulfate : Na2S2O8 sodium carbonate : Na2CO3 . 10H2O nickel nitrate : Ni(NO3)2 . 6H2O
Class: ------ elem=Ni,O redox precipitation
Summary: -------- Nickel hydroxide can be oxidized by persulfate to a higher hydrous oxide (nickel (III) and/or nickel (IV) oxide), but nickel carbonate is not oxidized. The carbonate can be oxidized, however, when hydroxide is added to the solution.
Description: ------------ Add a solution of sodium carbonate to a solution of nickel nitrate: Formation of a pale green precipitate.
Add some sodium persulfate: The solid dissolves, the precipitate is not affected, it remains pale green.
Add some solid NaOH: The solid dissolves, the precipitate turns black.
