Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- sulphuric acid : H2SO4 potassium tetrachloro iodate (III) : KICl4
Class: ------ redox elem=I,Cl
Summary: -------- Potassium tetrachloroiodide decomposes on heating. The residue, which remains behind is potassium chloride.
Description: ------------ Put a small amount of solid KICl4 in a test tube and heat this: A brown gas is evolved from the solid and the solid itself turns white. The brown gas probably is a mix of ICl and Cl2. It has a choking odour, similar to chlorine, but somewhat different.
Blow away the brown gas and add some concentrated H2SO4 to the white solid which remains: The solid starts bubbling and a colorless gas is evolved. On heating the gas is evolved a little bit faster. Thick fumes are produced, when the gas comes in contact with humid air. The gas is HCl.
