Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- hydrochloric acid : HCl sodium fluoride : NaF lithium carbonate : Li2CO3
Class: ------ precipitation elem=Li,F
Summary: -------- Lithium fluoride is only sparingly soluble.
Description: ------------ Dissolve some lithium carbonate in a small amount of dilute hydrochloric acid. This is associated with a lot of bubbling. Continue adding lithium carbonate, until addition of more lithium carbonate does not result in vigorous bubbling anymore. Let white solid settle and decant the clear liquid in a separate test tube. The clear liquid is a solution of LiCl, with possibly a minute quantity of carbonate present as well (lithium carbonate is slightly soluble in water).
Prepare a solution of sodium fluoride and add this to the solution of LiCl: The liquid becomes turbid. There is not a clear flocculent precipitate, but the liquid becomes somewhat milky. This is caused by formation of solid LiF.
