Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- sulphur : S8 potassium bromate : KBrO3
Class: ------ elem=Br,S redox
Summary: -------- When potassium bromate and sulphur are mixed, then a very dangerous mixture is created. This mixture, when ignited, produces an intensely bright flame.
Description: ------------ Carefully mix a small amount of potassium bromate and a similar amount of powdered sulphur and heat with a flame: An intense bright purplish white flame/flash is produced and the mixture deflagrates in a fraction of a second. No noticeable sound is produced, the reaction is not explosive.
BEWARE: This must be done with minute quantities of potassium bromate and sulphur (not more than a pinch on the tip of a knife)!
