Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- dimethyl sulfoxide : (CH3)2SO chromium (III) chloride hexahydrate : CrCl3.6H2O
Class: ------ elem=C,Cr precipitation coordination
Summary: -------- Chromium (III) chloride dissolves in DMSO to quite some extent. A precipitate is formed slowly. Is this a DMSO complex?
Description: ------------ Add some solid dark green chromium (III) chloride hexahydrate to DMSO: The solid dissolves and the liquid becomes beautifully green, just as the solution in water.
Let stand for half an hour: A solid has formed, the liquid has become turbid and a precipitate has settled at the bottom.
Add a lot of water and shake: The liquid mixes with the water, the solid dissolves. A clear and green solution is obtained.
