Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- potassium ferrocyanide : K4 [Fe(CN)6] . 3H2O sodium hydroxide : NaOH vanadyl sulfate : VOSO4.5H2O
Class: ------ elem=V,Fe precipitation
Summary: -------- The vanadyl salt of ferrocyanide does not dissolve in water. The salt is easily hydrolysed in alkaline environments (it resembles the prussian blue as far as this behaviour is concerned).
Description: ------------ Add an excess amount of a solution of potassium ferrocyanide to a slightly acidic solution of vanadyl sulfate: Formation of a yellow/green - yellow/ brown precipitate. The precipitate consists of a few large lumps, sponge- like in appearance.
Add some solid NaOH: The solid dissolves and the precipitate dissolves. The liquid becomes clear. The final color of the liquid is red/brown.
