Description of experiment

Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected experiment.

Needed compounds:
-----------------
  hydrogen peroxide : H2O2
  nitric acid : HNO3
  potassium hexa nitrito cobaltate (III) : K3 [Co(NO2)6] . H2O

Class:
------
  elem=Co
  redox

Summary:
--------
The hexanitrito cobaltate (III) ion is affected by concentrated nitric
acid. It changes from yellow to brown. What is the nature of this change?

Description:
------------
Add some solid cobalt yellow to HNO3 (appr. 50% by weight): The yellow
compound becomes brown/ochre. The liquid remains turbid.

Add somehydrogen peroxide (10% H2O2 by weight): The liquid starts foaming,
no further changes.
