Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- ammonium thiocyanate : NH4SCN ethyl acetate : CH3C(O)OCH2CH3 cupric chloride dihydrate : CuCl2 . 2H2O
Class: ------ elem=Cu coordination
Summary: -------- Copper (II) chloride dihydrate dissolves in ethyl acetate, albeit only in small amounts. With thiocyanate, a dark coordination complex is formed, also in ethyl acetate.
Description: ------------ Add some solid copper chloride dihydrate to ethyl acetate and shake: Only a small part of the solid dissolves. The liquid becomes light yellow/brown.
Add a small amount of NH4SCN: The solid slowly dissolves. The liquid becomes darker. Its color shift from yellow/brown to red/brown.
Add a lot of water: All solid dissolves, but the water becomes very turbid. A grey/green precipitate is formed.
