Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- sodium cyanide : NaCN hydrochloric acid : HCl copper sulfate penta hydrate : CuSO4 . 5H2O
Class: ------ elem=Cu,Cl coordination
Summary: -------- Copper (II) forms a yellow/brown coordination complex with cyanide in acidic media in the presence of chloride.
Description: ------------ Add some copper sulfate to some hydrochlorid acid (7%): The solid dissolves and the liquid becomes green.
Add some solid NaCN: The solid dissolves. Around the flakes of NaCN, the liquid becomes fairly dark brown. When the liquid is shaken and all NaCN is dissolved, then the liquid is brown/yellow and clear.
