Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- ammonium thiocyanate : NH4SCN methanol : CH3OH cobalt sulfate : CoSO4.7H2O
Class: ------ elem=Co coordination
Summary: -------- Cobalt sulfate dissolves in methanol, albeit not as well as in water. The liquid obtained is colored quite intensely. The dilute solution of cobalt sulfate in methanol looks more pink/purple than even the most concentrated aqueous solution. With thiocyanate a deep blue complex is formed in methanol.
Description: ------------ Add some solid CoSO4.7H2O to methanol: Only a small part of the solid dissolves. The liquid becomes fairly intense pink/purple.
Add some solid NH4SCN: The solid dissolves, the liquid becomes deep blue and a deep blue precipitate is formed.
Make the volume trice as large by adding water: The liquid still is deep blue, it becomes somewhat more clear.
Add even more water: The liquid becomes pink and remains slightly turbid.
