Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- hydrochloric acid : HCl hydroxyl amine sulfate : (NH3OH)2 SO4 sodium hydroxide : NaOH copper sulfate penta hydrate : CuSO4 . 5H2O
Class: ------ elem=Cu,N redox
Summary: -------- Copper (II) is reduced by hydroxyl amine very quickly in alkaline environments. Yellow copper (I) hydroxide/oxide is formed.
Description: ------------ Add a solution of copper sulfate to a solution of hydroxyl amine sulfate in a solution of excess sodium hydroxide: Formation of a dark green/brown precipitate, which quickly becomes yellow/ochre/brown. The copper (II) compound is reduced to a copper (I) compound.
Add an excess amount of HCl (appr. 10% by weight): Liquid becomes milky white for a while and then it becomes completely clear and colorless.
