Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- methanol : CH3OH sodium hydroxide : NaOH copper sulfate penta hydrate : CuSO4 . 5H2O
Class: ------ elem=Cu redox precipitate
Summary: -------- Copper hydroxide is not capable of oxidizing methanol.
Description: ------------ Add a solution of sodium hydroxide to a solution of copper sulfate: A blue precipitate is formed. On shaking this goes as little flakes into the liquid which float around slowly.
Add some methanol: The methanol mixes with the blue suspension, but no further visible changes occur. The precipitate remains blue. Also after heating to appr. 60 C the precipitate remains blue.
