Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- sodium thiosulfate : Na2S2O3 . 5H2O sodium hydroxide : NaOH silver chloride : AgCl
Class: ------ elem=Ag,S coordination
Summary: -------- Silver chloride and silver oxide dissolve in a solution of sodium thiosulfate. The reaction is not very fast.
Description: ------------ Add a solution of NaOH to some solid AgCl: The white solid becomes brown.
Add an excess amount of sodium thiosulfate: Small brown particles quickly dissolve. Larger pieces need more time to dissolve and become white before they completely dissolve. Probably the larger particles of silver chloride were only covered with an oxide layer at the outside and the interior was unaffected silver chloride. The largest particles (appr. 1.5 mm radius) need more than 30 minutes for complete dissolving.
