Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- sulphuric acid : H2SO4 sodium carbonate : Na2CO3 . 10H2O silver nitrate : AgNO3
Class: ------ elem=Ag precipitation
Summary: -------- Silver (I) gives a pale yellow precipitate with carbonates.
Description: ------------ Add a solution of Na2CO3.10H2O to a solution of silver nitrate: A pale yellow precipitate is formed, which quickly sinks to the bottom of the test tube, where it builds a voluminous pale yellow / off white layer.
Add some dilute sulfuric acid: The precipitate dissolves and a gas is evolved (CO2). The liquid becomes almost clear, a faint turbidity remains. Is this due to low solubility of silver sulfate or due to impurities in the sulphuric acid (traces of chlorides)?
