Description of experiment

Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected experiment.

Needed compounds:
-----------------
  ammonium thiocyanate : NH4SCN
  cobalt chloride : CoCl2.6H2O

Class:
------
  elem=Co
  coordination

Summary:
--------
Cobalt builds complexes with thiocyanate, although not very clearly.

Description:
------------
Add a solution of CoCl2.6H2O to a solution of NH4SCN: The resulting liquid
remains pink, but its color is more intense than that of the original
solution. The opposite would be the case if no reaction occurred (dilution
of Co2+ ions). The liquid remains clear.

Remark: The formation of a coordination complex is the most suitable
explanation of the intensifying of the color of the solution on addition
of thiocyanate.
