Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- tetraethyl ammonium bromide : (CH3CH2)4NBr
Class: ------ elem=C,N organic
Summary: -------- Tetraethyl ammonium bromide is somewhat flammable. It can be burnt, but a supporting flame must be present, it does not continue burning on its own.
Description: ------------ Take a metal spatula with some solid tetraethyl ammonium bromide and keep this in a flame: The solid burns with a slightly sooty orange flame. When it is taken out of the flame, then the fire does not continue burning on its own. As soon as it is put in the external flame, it also starts burning again. Fairly quickly, all of the solid has disappeared and only a minor amount of black material remains. The solid apparently chars when strongly heated.
