Description of experiment

Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected experiment.

Needed compounds:
-----------------
  sodium hydroxide : NaOH
  chloroform : CHCl3
  thymol : C6H3 OH CH3 CH3CHCH3

Class:
------
  elem=C
  organic

Summary:
--------
Thymol reacts with chloroform and/or sodium hydroxide when heated. A yellow/
green compound is formed. What is this compound?

Description:
------------
Add some chloroform to some solid thymol: The solid dissolves, the liquid
becomes colorless.

Add water (appr. 10 times as much as the volume of the chloroform) and add
some solid sodium hydroxide: The solid dissolves, the chloroform layer becomes
turbid and remains on the bottom, the aqueous layer remains clear.

Heat the two-layer system: The chloroform boils away. The liquid becomes
yellow with a green hue and it becomes slightly turbid. Finally, when all
chloroform is driven off, the yellow/green liquid remains.
