Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- sodium bicarbonate : NaHCO3 cobalt sulfate : CoSO4.7H2O
Class: ------ elem=Co precipitate
Summary: -------- Cobalt (II) gives a precipitate with bicarbonate, which probably is cobalt carbonate. This precipitate is formed, while driving off CO2.
Description: ------------ Add a solution of cobalt sulfate to a solution of NaHCO3: Formation of a pink/purple precipitate. The precipitate does not form at once, but the liquid slowly becomes more and more turbid. After appr. 10 seconds, the liquid is completely opaque. After appr. 1 minute, the liquid suddenly starts bubbling. Small bubbles of CO2 escape from the liquid. The liquid does not foam, it bubbles like soda water. The color of the precipitate does not change after the bubbling of the liquid.
