Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- thionyl chloride : OSCl2
Class: ------ elem=S,Cl hydrolysis
Summary: -------- Thionyl chloride quickly hydrolyses in the presence of water.
Description: ------------ Take 1 ml of thionyl chloride and pour this in a beaker, filled with water: The thionyl chloride sinks to the bottom and forms oily drops at the bottom. On and near the oily drops, big bubbles of gas are formed, which quickly get smaller when they are rising to the surface. Only minimal amounts of gas reach the surface. The oily drops quickly disappear. What happens is that a mix of HCl and SO2 is formed at the drops of thionyl chloride. These gases move upwards, but both dissolve in water very well, so while moving upwards, they dissolve.
