Description of experiment
Below follows a plain text transcript of the selected
experiment.
Needed compounds: ----------------- hydrogen peroxide : H2O2 hydrochloric acid : HCl sodium sulfide : Na2S . 3H2O
Class: ------ elem=S,O redox
Summary: -------- Sodium sulfide is oxidized by acidic hydrogen peroxide with extreme violence.
Description: ------------ Make a mix of approximately equal volumes of HCl (30%) and H2O2 (appr. 30% by weight): The liquid is clear and colorless, no gas is evolved.
Add a scale of solid sodium sulfide (yellow solid, technical quality): The solid starts fizzling as soon as it hits the liquid. After a second, however, it reacts with extreme violence and immediately dissolves, forming a milky pale yellow 'blob' in the liquid, which sinks to the bottom. When the liquid is shaken, it becomes milky light yellow. There is a fairly strong smell of H2S.
