Results for 'sodium cyanide':
EXPERIMENT 1 --------------- Copper sulfate dissolves in methanol quite well. A blue solution is obtained. Copper chloride dihydrate also dissolves in methanol quite well. A green solution is obtained. With thiocyanate a deep brown complex is formed, which dissolves in methanol, but at higher concentration this precipitates. With cyanide, a dirty green compound is formed, which, however, quickly turns white. This probably is copper (I) cyanide.
EXPERIMENT 2 --------------- Copper (II) forms a yellow/brown coordination complex with cyanide in acidic media in the presence of chloride.
EXPERIMENT 3 --------------- Rhenium, when dissolved in nitric acid, gives colorless perrhenate ions, [ReO4]-. With zinc, in the presence of hydrochloric acid of sufficient concentration, this can be reduced to a yellow/green species. With cyanide, in alkaline environment this forms a brown and clear solution. The yellow/ green species may be [ReCl6]2-, which according to literature is green. With cyanide, a complex may be formed.
EXPERIMENT 4 --------------- Hydrogen cyanide (or cyanide salt) slowly changes to a dark brown/black compound, when it is allowed to stand. At least this happens in strongly acidic media.
EXPERIMENT 5 --------------- Cyanate ion forms complexes with many metal ions. These complexes have a strong color and are not stable in acidic solution.
