Yttrium  - Y

 

   

 

Yttrium is the first element of the second row transition metals. It follows immediately after strontium and hence it is a reactive metal, which exists in the +3 oxidation state in its solutions. It quickly dissolves in dilute mineral acids, but also humidity and air slowly attack the metal. The sample shown here still has some shiny properties, but much of the metal filings are covered by an oxide layer. This makes the filings appear dark.

Freshly cut yttrium has a beautiful silvery/grey lustre. Below, a sample of more than 50 grams of yttrium is shown. The sample nicely demonstrates how shiny the metal can be.
