Sulphur bromide  -  S2Br2

This is approximately 500 mg of sulphur bromide, made by reacting sulphur with bromine. This is an oily liquid, which has a beautiful red color. It looks like a solution of a red compound in water or another colorless liquid, but this actually is the color of the liquid itself. This compound has a horrible smell and is very toxic. The compound is not sufficiently volatile for seeing a colored vapor above the liquid. When it is heated, then a reddish brown vapor can be observed, but according to literature, this compound also decomposes at heating and then the color of the vapor may also be due to formation of bromine vapor. This compound has a much lighter color than elemental bromine.
