Sodium  -  Na

 

 

This sample shows 5 grams of sodium. It is really remarkable, how large a sample of just 5 grams of sodium is. The sodium is stored under a layer of clear mineral oil.

The picture below shows a sample of sodium, consisting of many small globules, with an average size of 5 mm and a few larger ones. This sodium was made in this form by cutting a strongly oxidized and dirty crust of a larger sample of sodium and melting all the crusts under mineral oil. The sodium then forms globules and can be separated from the dirt with some patience and effort.

 

Finally, the sample below is the sodium which was cut (the globules above are from the crusts, cut from the sodium shown below). The sample below is well over 100 grams of sodium, the globules above have a total weight of approximately 20 grams.
