Hydroquinone is a water-soluble compound, used as photographic developer. It is also called p-dihydroxybenzene. Its solutions are colorless, but on standing these solutions slowly turn brown by aerial oxidation. In alkaline environments, this oxidation is much faster and then the liquid turns black quickly.
